When Children Hurt Children – Peer on Peer Abuse
Full Course Title
Dr Anna Markham: When Children Hurt Children - Peer on Peer Abuse
Summary of Training
Peer on peer abuse happens in a range of settings whether it’s online, inside or outside of school / college. This workshop is for everyone who comes into contact with children and young people who wants to recognise the signs, develop their confidence to respond and understand therapeutic approaches for support.
Peer on peer abuse is a multi-faceted and complex issue which can be difficult to explore, particularly since peer influence is a key factor in the decisions made by young people. Research indicates that girls are more at risk of certain kinds of abusive behaviours by their peers as are children with learning difficulties or disabilities, LGBTQ children and those from different communities. Boys can also be affected. This does not mean that individual experiences cause the abuse the victim is subjected to, but that these may be used by those children who harm who have power and control over them.
Peer on peer abuse can relate to various forms of abuse and some of the areas we will be exploring on the day include: Bullying, Exploitation, Domestic Abuse within intimate relationships in young people, Serious Youth Violence including those most serious of offences (Murder and Rape) and Harmful Sexual Behaviour. The short and long term impact on children, families and the wider community will be discussed.
Participants will learn about the sorts of signs that indicate difficulty and the vital importance of making every effort to understand children’s behaviours with reference to the environmental contexts in which they occur. At the same time it is important to recognise the needs of those children who harm their peers.
The last part of the workshop will offer practical advice to support professionals in creating a safe environment which promotes respect and fosters open communication. We will consider effective ways to respond to incidents of peer on peer abuse including safety planning, relevant legislation and with consideration of the wider influences affecting children from the wider environment (contextual safeguarding). The complexity in identifying when what might be seen as “normal” developmentally appropriate childhood behaviour becomes harmful to others will be explored through the use of examples.
