Lou Mason: Setting Up in Private Practice for Working with Children & Young People

Summary of Training

Please note: this is a ONE DAY delivery of this training package – a 2 day delivery (10am – 2pm each day) is running in March.

Are you thinking of setting up in Private Practice to work with children, teenagers, and young people?

Or have you already started and would like some reassurance that you’ve put everything in place to enable a safe and successful practice in the long term?

Perhaps you’re already well established but at the stage for a refresh and review, just for peace of mind?

Whatever your situation, this is an opportunity to invest in some expert mentoring, guidance and encouragement to give you and your business the best support possible.

By booking this package, you’ll be taking part in a training that will give you an ultra protective but highly flexible framework that will enable you to design, shape and run your practice exactly the way you want it.

A package that includes a selection of key template paperwork that isn’t simply handed over – but is talked through, explained and explored together, so that you are fully informed and prepared for any amendments or adaptations that may become necessary as time goes on. Each of your clients and their needs will always be unique and your paperwork will need to reflect that.

An in-depth engaging and fun experience that provides a comprehensive walk through of everything you need to plan, prepare, research and put in place – so there are no challenging surprises further along the road!

All shared by a trainer, coach and mentor who not only has her own first-hand experiences of running a successful practice to draw on but who has helped launch over 400 in person practices – all shapes and sizes, modalities, client bases, skill sets, bases and approaches.

If any of this speaks to you, then you might want to invest in this flagship course. It provides an incredibly valuable and important support system to enable you to create a safe, thriving business that not only runs exactly the way you need it to but is totally unique to any others out there.

Training Outline

WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE WORTH THE INVESTMENT?

This isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ training – this is fully bespoke highly specialised support that will guide and enable you to  create a bespoke practice and business that works FOR YOU exactly how you want it to.

It places huge importance on the therapeutic relationship – which is a part of every practical or operational decision you make – and provides an essential insight and a roadmap into working with the parents of your clients, as they are effectively your employers.

It has a proven success rate – it has played a part in the launch of over 400 practices of all shapes and sizes – and is a hugely supportive, encouraging and inspirational experience that can help to settle nerves, increase confidence and give clear focus for your path ahead.

You also have the option of investing in some additional support options after the training is completed – these aren’t a requirement but are on offer to anyone who may feel they might benefit from having a coach / mentor to check in with at various experiential stages in the evolution of their practice.

WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?

This training has been specially created for qualified or nearly qualified practitioners and professionals who are looking to work privately in person with children and young people either imminently or at some point in the future.

It will help you to not only navigate your way through all the various administrative, legal and business elements you need to prepare for and have in place from the start (including the work with parents), but also to offer support, encouragement and solidarity in terms of the more personal elements of running your own business that touch on aspects of self -worth, self- confidence and self-belief.

It’s an exciting thing to go it alone but it can also at times feel more than a bit daunting (even overwhelming) so this package has been designed to give a complete overview of everything you need to know in one go to help make the whole experience a lot easier, safer and enjoyable!

It’s also suitable for practitioners with an existing practice who might be wanting to take some time for a refresh and a review – lots of people attend who are already set up and they find it can help to consider alternative approaches or just problem solve those awkward occasional issues that may have crept in over time.

WHAT’S COVERED?

The course provides a fully comprehensive overview of everything you need to consider, research, plan and prepare to either get set up from scratch to work with children, adolescents or adults / families in person or to refresh your existing practice.

We cover Setting Up Your Therapy Space, Scheduling Sessions and What to Consider, Branding & Identity, Fees & Invoicing, Accountancy / Going Self-Employed, Paperwork (including talking through an extensive template parent contract & referral form), Security & GDPR (including a guide to writing your data protection policy), Marketing, Networking, and many other areas that come up during the sessions.

As well as all the practicalities, there’s time given over to consider individual needs as everyone’s practice, way of working, skill sets and intentions for their service will be totally unique to them so there’s plenty of opportunity during the day to apply and respond to the specific needs of the attendees.

There’s also a lot of support, encouragement, tips, advice and first-hand experiences that are shared to help personalise the training and create a fun environment filled with solidarity and security for the adventure ahead.

WHAT DOES THE PRICE INCLUDE?

There are two price options: the 8-hour training package only, OR the 8-hour training package plus a 60-minute individual 1-2-1 coaching session with Lou.

The training package includes the 8-hour training & mentoring day (group of four maximum), key template paperwork (discussed in depth together) that you can then keep and adapt for your own practice, other useful documents, some professional contacts and an 8-hour CPD certificate.

The other option includes all the above plus an additional 60-minute individual 1-2-1 coaching session with Lou at a later date of your choice (within Lou’s availability). This could be useful for checking in that you’ve got everything covered before opening your doors or further into the first few months of practice when you may have new questions or challenges that have arisen.

About Lou Mason

As well as being someone with a commitment and passion for supporting others to identify and fulfil their potential, Lou comes from a rich 30-year background of creativity, communication, solo responsibility for running a business, team leadership, coaching & mentoring, financial self-sufficiency, therapeutic framing and first-hand experience.

After a brief dalliance as a professional actress as a teenager, Lou switched paths to gain a degree in Drama from the University of Manchester which led to a hugely successful career in broadcast television. For over 25 years, she worked as a freelance Producer / Director on a vast range of primetime shows across all the genres for all major UK broadcasters leading teams, directing big crews, and mentoring & coaching new talent – from junior production staff all the way through to well-known presenters and performers.

In 2014, Lou retrained as a child, adolescent and parent therapist using the creative arts. This experience matched perfectly with her desire to help others help themselves and inspired her to set up not one but two new businesses; a thriving private therapeutic practice for working with children and their parents, and a larger organisation The Sunflower Network Ltd, which specialised in providing training and resources around child mental health and emotional wellbeing. Sunflower has recently evolved into With Kokoro Ltd in partnership with Dan Meade.

Private Practice Mentor

One of the most successful elements of Lou’s work for Sunflower was this bespoke training and mentoring package. It is a fully comprehensive package and can be delivered both to small groups and as a one-to-one intensive consultation day: Creating Your Bespoke Private Practice for Working with Children & Young People. Over the course of the last six years, Lou has helped launch well over 400 small practices/ businesses providing a carefully tailored comprehensive mix of training, mentoring & coaching including adaptable and comprehensive guide paperwork.

Coaching

Lou is now taking her experience from all the different areas of her life and career – performing, producing, directing, team leadership, self-employment, retraining, changing career in her 40s, therapeutic framing, entrepreneurship, small business owner & mentor, coach and passionate advocate for people achieving their goals – and consolidating it into her coaching provision; Lou Mason Coaching (& Mentoring). Across 2025, she is formalising her existing role as a registered Coach Practitioner by attaining an accreditation with the EMCC as a Senior Coach Practitioner. Accountability, integrity, and strong ethics are a hugely important part of who Lou is, and she looks forward to enhancing and expanding her knowledge and skillset as she progresses on the journey to accreditation. She is an EMCC UK Member, fully insured and abides by the EMCC Global Code of Ethics.
